Hello! One of the hardest things is feeling like we have hurt or disappointed those closest to us. It’s a struggle every day to keep relationships and even friendships going smoothly. We often disappoint ourselves, and life hasn’t always been what we hoped it would be. Maybe things look good on the surface but inside we feel like everyone else has it figured out while we barely keep it together. It doesn’t have to feel like this, and I can help you feel better through therapy. While in therapy with us you will definitely laugh, you might cry, and you will see changes in your life that you’ve wanted for a long time. Good therapy can help us feel less like a failure and find more success in life. Changing the way we think can change the way we feel and dealing with trauma can help it feel less awful. Therapy can help us be a better partner, friend, or parent. Whether you’re reading this for yourself, for your family, or as a couple we can help you make things better. You'll feel safe and connected while you process the past so life becomes easier and more enjoyable. Our therapists can help you learn skills that will help you feel better about yourself and have better interactions with other people.

My name is Michael Whiteside, and I am a compassionate, communal, and comedic Licensed Clinical Social Worker dedicated to helping others regain control of their life and living life to the fullest. Together, we will partner in helping you have a life worth living by understanding how the pain of the past is interrupting the present and jeopardizing the future. During therapy (individual, couples, family, etc.), life coaching, and emotional support animal assessments, I utilize a combination of CBT, psychodynamic interpersonal, self-psychological, strengths-based, and ecological perspectives, I aim to help the client identify their greatest goals when addressing their traumas, fears, and psychological challenges. Together we investigate their past in order to understand how these past challenges are developing in the present and jeopardizing their future. I empower them to reclaim their inner power and live the life they desire, not simply the one they live.

I am a Master’s Level Intern in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Ball State University. I'm working with Associates in Behavioral Counseling under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. I work with all ages, from young children to older adults, who experience relationship/family concerns, depression, grief, trauma, anxiety, self-esteem, and behavioral disorders. Sessions will always be person-centered, culturally-sensitive, and trauma-informed. My approach to therapy is holistic, mind-body oriented, and rooted in mindfulness. I also pull from emotionally-focused therapy, attachment-based therapy, and expressive arts therapy. I believe that the therapy should fit the person, not the other way around. So, I may pull from other modalities that will benefit you the most.

The choice to seek therapy demonstrates an openness to growth and commitment to well-being. I provide a safe and non-judgmental environment in which I understand that each of us has a unique set of strengths and challenges that shape who we are and how we experience relationships. In my collaborative work with individuals, couples, young children, and families, we focus on developing insight and establishing new strategies to overcome difficult patterns or concerns.
I have been in private practice since 1995, providing mental health counseling to undergrad and graduate students who may have difficulties living away from home, strenuous academic schedules, trouble making friends and fitting in, as well as stress related to dissertation and associated exams. When the relatively brief nature of on-campus counseling isn’t enough, students appreciate the easy access and privacy of online counseling through the Google Meet app.
I'm so glad you're here! A little about me: I’ve been working in the mental health field since earning my Masters of Science in Social Work degree with a specialization in Alcohol and Drug Counseling from the University of Louisville in 2011. Over the years, I’ve worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings, supporting adults through challenges with mental health and substance use. Those experiences have given me the privilege of walking alongside people in some of the hardest and most transformative moments of their lives. I especially enjoy working with adults navigating life transitions, whether that’s beginning college, relationship challenges, big life changes like marriage or divorce, experiencing grief or loss, changing careers, experiencing family stress, or facing other big shifts. I have a special passion for supporting people with personality disorders, anxiety, depression, stress, and substance use challenges. I also offer a safe place for LGBTQ+ individuals. My background in crisis work means I’m comfortable meeting you exactly where you are, even if life feels overwhelming right now. My style is conversational, open, and nonjudgmental. I believe therapy is a partnership. I’ll bring tools, strategies, and perspective, and you’ll bring your lived experience and goals. Together, we’ll work on building coping skills, practicing mindfulness, learning emotional regulation, and finding new ways of seeing and responding to life’s challenges. You've taken the first step. If you’re ready to take the next step, I’d love to partner with you to create a plan that feels doable and supportive, so you can move toward the balance, healing, and growth you deserve. I appreciate the courage it takes to reach out for help, as living a balanced life requires intentionality and action. I would love to help you move forward from here!

How you feel about yourself, relate with others, and make your way in the world is significantly influenced by your earliest relationships. If your caregivers struggled with their own psychological health, their ability to connect with and be emotionally available to you may have been impaired. You may have felt invalidated, rejected, smothered or unwanted. Since you had no choice but to adapt and attach to the adults available to you, you may now find yourself in relationships that feel empty, end abruptly, or are riddled with conflict. Such disharmony only exacerbates feeling depressed and anxious. As a psychodynamic therapist, I am trained to recognize the underlying thoughts, feelings, and patterns that keep you from sustaining meaningful relationships and stuck in emotional pain. Rather than viewing you as a diagnosis or problem to be solved, I'm most interested in understanding and helping you work through what is troubling you. I completed training at The Object Relations Institute of New York City, The Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago, and I am an Assistant Professor at Indiana University South Bend . I am also a classically trained musician and former high school choral director. Please visit my website at www.kurtmhanus.com
