WELCOME TO SECOND STORY Is life not the way it's supposed to be? Do things seem broken? Maybe it’s anxiety, a relationship problem, or emotional pain from long ago. Maybe it’s something that “just doesn’t feel right”, or perhaps you just need extra support for a major life decision or situation. We are here to listen and to help provide the confidence and guidance you need to change negative behavior patterns and begin taking steps in the right direction. As professional therapists, our role is to guide you as you take steps towards positive life changes, healing, and a healthy mind. Together we’ll work to uncover and better understand your story, its challenges and the day-to-day stressors that detract from your life and focus, and will identify practice and help you build habits that will make you stronger. I provide guidance and support to teens and young adults who are struggling with various life transitions such as processing family conflict, transition from high school to college, perfectionism, anxiety, student athletes who are struggling with time management, young adults and adults struggling with depression or anxiety, and adjusting to life after college. An important part of the therapy process is learning how to find balance, organize your thoughts and learn about what has shaped the story you've been telling yourself. Being busy and physically active has always been a big part of my life and has driven me to my success as a therapist. However, it hasn't always been easy. I love working with college students, especially student athletes, who are struggling with the transition to college, high pressure with academics, sports, and adults in your life that just don't seem to understand what you're going through at the moment. It's not healthy to "tough it out." Let's figure out what's going on, identify some new strategies and bring the best version of yourself forward. Making the decision to honor yourself and reach out to a therapist is often the hardest part of this process. If any of this has resonated with you while viewing the results of your search, contact me via email or phone to schedule your first appointment. Thursday evening and some weekend appointments are available at this time.

In my experience working with people from different countries, I’ve seen the importance of providing a safe space where you can be yourself, feel understood and accepted regardless of your culture, religion, race, gender identity, sexual preference, or background. A good therapeutic relationship and a common comprehension of what led you to start therapy, will allow us to guide the therapy process, integrate techniques from different therapies, and give you a better grasp of how to achieve your goals. I’m Bilingual in English and Spanish, I have a master’s degree in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and an Advanced Certification in Schema Therapy. I draw from an integrative psychotherapy orientation, that allows the integration of other evidence-based therapies/techniques.

Does something feel off? Do you feel like you're getting by okay but need a little something? Therapy might be just the right tool to get you back to your full functioning self again. Sometimes life makes us carry way more than we can handle (although we rarely admit it) and that load takes a burden on us emotionally, physically, and mentally. It affects our relationships at work, home, and even our sex lives! It's not YOU, it's LIFE! My Specific areas of interest include marital conflict, divorce and/or remarriage, Infidelity, sex addiction, grief/loss, and more. If your LIFE is weighing you down, let's talk.
My approach begins with the understanding that connecting with one’s self and others is a pathway toward finding meaning and fulfillment. This pathway of connecting can become blocked by old emotional wounds or current relationship struggles. The partnership formed in the therapy relationship becomes the platform where healing broken connections may occur. This approach can help bring about lasting change by getting at the ‘root’ of the problem and bring relief from symptoms. Central to Chris’ approach is a concern for the role that faith and belief play in the life of the patient. My practice is shaped by his time training at Northwestern University, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago. My approach to working to help people change comes primarily from a model for psychotherapy where tending to feelings, symptoms, and patterns of relating becomes an important part of the healing process. In our first conversation, you can expect to briefly discuss your concerns as well as set up an initial meeting. The first meeting is where your concerns and history are better understood in order to offer specific recommendations and feedback.
I believe that every person has the capacity to grow, develop strengths and skills, heal wounds, and experience new levels of wholeness. Therapy can be a catalyst for these changes; a place to be fully seen, known, and equipped. I work with women to uncover and correct unhelpful coping patterns and belief systems, create sustainable habits for mind-body-spirit wellness, establish healthy attachments in relationships, and foster a strong sense of resilience in the midst of challenges and traumas. My experience includes helping women navigate transitions and stressors related to college and post-college life, career goals or disappointments, work-life balance, identity and purpose, marriage and singleness, perinatal mood disorders, anxiety, and depression. Healing and hope occur in relationship; not isolation. Counseling is a safe space where you can share your burden with an empathetic helper attuned to your needs. I would be honored to hear your story and partner with you in your journey.
Starting therapy is a huge step towards bettering yourself, and taking that leap of faith to begin this journey is the beginning stage of healing. I would be extremely privileged and feel so honored to walk alongside you during this journey. I will do my best to provide you with the skills and strategies that you are looking for in order to better your well-being. I take into account everyone’s individual backgrounds in order to develop the most effective treatment for you, and to allow you to feel safe and heard. I am a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor, and received my undergraduate degree in Social Work from Grand Valley State University, and my Master’s degree in Counseling Education with an emphasis in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Michigan University. In the past I have worked with clients ages 7 and up, who are struggling with life transitions, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other challenges. I believe that therapy can be a transformative experience; something that allows people to live their authentic and best lives, and helps us to develop coping skills to handle life’s toughest challenges. I practice therapy from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapeutic (CBT) approach. I strive to provide an empathetic environment for those who step into my office, and to provide a safe space where you can expect to feel heard and comfortable while working with me. I am always striving to learn more, so that I can best treat those who I work with!
I believe healing begins when we feel safe enough to tell the truth, about our pain, our fears, and the parts of ourselves we learned to hide for surviving purposes. Therapy with me is about creating space to understand yourself with more compassion, clarity, and choice. With over 15 years of experience in the business world, I understand the burnout of high-functioning, over-responsible individuals, the life transitions coming from career change or relocation and the identity exploration and rebuilding after disruption. I am especially drawn to supporting people who have learned to be strong early in life, and are now learning how to be gentler with themselves.
