Therapy is worth it and so are you! While life can be amazing, there is no doubt at times we will experience hardships. However, you do not have to navigate these struggles by yourself. By emphasizing collaboration, resiliency, optimism, and empowerment, I aim to equip my clients with the tools and resources needed to assist them in revamping and creating the life they are striving to live. I work with all genders, sexual orientations, races, and cultures & welcome clients as they are. I am trained in mindfulness, yoga, and trauma-informed care. I have experience working with adults, teenagers, & children. As a therapist, I encourage clients to be authentic and challenge their negative thinking while reminding them they are capable and amazing. If we do end up working together, prepare to be heard, encouraged, laugh, and most importantly, work to build the life you envision for yourself! Lifeologie Counseling works with a very diverse set of clientele that experience a multitude of mental health and life issues. Lifeologie's Durham practice is located about 15 minutes from North Carolina Central University's campus and has worked closely with many students and faculty from the school. Graduate students from numerous universities, including NCCU, Wake Forest, and NC State, have completed their practicum/internships at Lifeologie Counseling and have begun working under the owner/supervisor, Dr. Elizabeth Grady. While working in close connection with colleges across NC, Lifeologie has had the opportunity to help counsel and connect with undergraduate, graduate, transfer, first generation, and many other types of students. Learning from and understanding the various cultures and subcultures existing within these schools/populations has allowed for further knowledge and experience of Lifeologie counselors. Some issues amongst students that Lifeologie counselors have worked with include school adjustments/troubles, life transitions, anxiety and depression, racial/gender/religious identities, interpersonal relationships, and deep rooted trauma.
NEW CLIENTS WELCOME -- Your anxiety has gotten out of control, and your trauma is calling the shots. You’re mentally reliving your lowest moments over & over, unsettling heartache creeping up when you least expect it. Your relationships or career have begun falling apart as a result of the fear & lack of control you’ve been feeling. You want to come up for air, but the waves keep pushing you back under and you just don’t know how much longer you can tread water... But you’ve found a safe harbor here. I offer a variety of specialized interventions, such as EMDR, CBT, and traditional talk therapy, to calm the storm. Our work together will focus on actually healing the brain and getting you relief quickly by going beyond, “How do you feel about that?” while feeling low-key, comfortable, and authentic. If you are someone who is seeking to improve your quality of life, career, and relationships, you’ve come to the right place.
You are sitting in therapy watching your therapist's lips move while she tells you for the fourth time that her cousin is gay and just got a “very butch” haircut. You can’t help thinking, “She just doesn’t get it.” He misgenders you, or forgets your partner’s pronouns, she pulls out Food and Mood, and he talks about how apple cider vinegar might be the solution to all your problems. She hasn't lived in a fat body. He hasn’t experienced homophobia or heterosexism from the inside. What initially seemed like a small hill to climb in your relationship has started to feel like a mountain. Maybe she tells you your black top is so slimming. Maybe once he referred to queer people as ‘homosexuals.’ Maybe, when you report your experiences of oppression, she tells you that the other party probably meant well and just wanted you to be healthier or have it easier in the world. You don’t trust him with your whole self, how can you? You’ve tried so many therapists in the past and she’s not that bad, is she? You continue to hope that therapy with a therapist who doesn’t quite get it will be enough to meet your needs. It’s not enough. You deserve a therapist who understands your lived experiences. You deserve a therapist who knows what it’s like to have your doctor prescribe weight loss to treat arthritis in your wrists, and who can truly hear it when you tell them about your experience with your homophobic aunt at Thanksgiving. You deserve a therapist who approaches the world with a solid intersectional anti-oppression framework that sees society, rather than some flaw in you, as the central piece of your problem. I can be that therapist. I’m fat, I’m queer, I have an intersectional lens, and I want to dismantle systems of oppression one client session at a time.

Whatever brought you to consider therapy, know that you are not alone. Many of us struggle to manage intense emotions, connect deeply with others, meet our goals, live up to our expectations, accept ourselves, or find meaning in life. In a safe and supportive space you are free to express yourself openly, honestly, and authentically, and together we can work to discover the ways you would like your life to be different. The approach we take to implement those changes will be guided by your personality, culture, and needs. Through developing mental, emotional, and physical self-awareness, my clients build skills that enable them to handle painful thoughts, emotions, and experiences in more adaptive ways, They steadily shedding ways of relating with the world and themselves that are harmful, unsustainable, or no longer serving them, creating space to bring their values to life. I find mindfulness and nurturing the mind-body connection to be powerful tools in accessing our natural healing abilities. Overcoming a number of my own mental health struggles in the past has yielded a wealth of compassion and empathy for the clients I see today, as well as faith in their abilities to heal, grow, and build a life worth living.
My primary goal as a counselor is to create an open and non-judgmental space in which clients can express their thoughts and feelings freely. None of us are without our struggles, and I find it beneficial for each of us to have a space where we can explore these struggles reflectively and creatively. I aspire to gain a holistic understanding of my clients, their life experiences, and their issues, so that we might collectively explore opportunities for growth through evidence-based practice. I find great value in person-centered, cognitive behavioral, acceptance & commitment, and existential therapies. However, perhaps the greatest determinant of success is a relationship built upon mutual trust and understanding between counselor and client. I believe that sound counseling practice is an active, and at times difficult, process for the client. However, take comfort in the fact that it is my mission as a counselor to walk with you through trial and tribulation. I would be honored to join you on your journey.
