Hello and thank you for visiting my practice page. The college experience can bring with it many changes and emotions. I know from personal times as a student that college and graduate school can be overwhelming, exciting and a wave of emotions and situations through the years. I work with college students to talk through situations, gain insight in processing what they are going through while growing and moving through the many experiences that can present themselves as a student. I am licensed in the states of NY and CT as a LCSW, I see students throughout NY and CT in person and through a HIPAA compliant Telehealth platform. Together we discuss, process and work on a variety of topics related to adjustments in life, anxiety, depression, trauma, eating related issued and body image, self-esteem, substance use, issues involving sports teams, Greek life related to sororities and fraternities, health issues, and many different relationship issues. I operate from a nonjudgmental, open and honest place drawing on a variety of therapeutic modalities. Please visit my web site to learn more about my practice and send me a message if you are interested in seeing if we might be a good fit. Take care.

I have been in practice for over 30 years. My practice specializes in anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, phobias, and "life issues." I see college students dealing with stress and anxiety relating to college, career decisions, relationship issues. Also see people who are struggling with bereavement, adoption issues. I work with people of different ages/stages: Young adults, mid-life and senior citizens. When dealing with life issues and anxiety I use Cognitive/Behavioral therapy techniques as well as psychodynamic techniques. When dealing with phobias, I believe in helping patients learn techniques to help relieve some of their anxiety symptoms and then working on their thoughts/cognitions which effect how they talk to themselves. My philosophy is : Life is to be enjoyed, not endured. Isn't it time you started enjoying yours.
Whether you are struggling with past or recent trauma, anger, anxiety, depression, grief/loss, relationship concerns or marital issues, it is important that you know you do not have to be alone in this journey. You deserve someone who will listen intently, understand fully, and provide an open, supportive, and non-judgmental space to rebuild through. No problem is too great to overcome if you are willing to do the work. Therapy helps you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships, become free of old patterns, or simply find ways to process pain or memories that have kept you feeling stuck. It is a healing process that allows you to not only start feeling better but gain insight, awareness, and ultimately begin trusting your intuition and experience. Relationships are as capable of hurt and pain as they are for healing. At Clear Direction Psychological Services, you will learn with the support, expertise, knowledge and guidance of your psychologist how to better relate to and understand your experiences, thoughts, feelings, behaviors, relationships, and challenges. You will learn how to regulate the full spectrum of emotions, find balance in your life, and create meaningful, loving and supportive relationships with yourself and others. You will learn how to make healthier and wiser choices and find fulfillment in your day-to-day living. Clear Direction Psychological Services is a small, specialty practice located on Long Island, New York. Dr. Smyth is a dedicated psychologist whose work is much more than "a job." Those who enter are cared for like family; psychotherapy is Dr. Smyth’s passion, craft, and life's work. Dr. Smyth understands no two individuals are the same. She will work with you to understand the root cause of your struggles and address those issues with long-lasting strategies, helping you get closer to the life you have always wanted. You - feeling overwhelmed, stuck, like the world is on fire and you're supposed to just "cope." You - navigating relationships, friendships, and family, questioning who you are, thinking "what's next?" Sessions with me - a space for you to talk things out, get clarity and confidence, and a better relationship with your self. You show up as you are, and we go from there, without you feeling judged or "therapized" like it's going out of style. (Although that is something I can provide if you really want! We can figure it out as we go, that's kind of the point!) My approach to therapy is relational, which means I believe the trust and connection between therapist and client is paramount to the healing process. I see you as the expert of your life and my role is support and guide you with compassion and curiosity. Together we can explore what's working, what's not, and how you can move forward. I'm especially passionate about supporting women, college students, and LGBTQ+ folks as you navigate the complexities that come with living in today's world. Therapy should be a place of growth, insight, and finding the joy among the hurt. If you're ready to explore and create meaningful change for yourself, I'd love to work with you!
I offer virtual therapy in a supportive space where you can share your experiences and develop new skills. Whether you’re working through trauma, anxiety, or life’s everyday stressors I’m here to listen, support, and help you grow.

there are a number of credentials i could share about myself and ways you might decide if i'm the right therapist for you, but honestly, between you and me, what matters is that i love this work and i believe in this work. i feel deeply humbled to hold people's stories and hearts for a living. the trust that this work requires is no small thing, and i never take that lightly. in my clinical practice, i use theories rooted in an anti-racist, queer liberation, harm reduction, and body-neutral framework. i feel most drawn to this work through an attachment-focused analytical frame. we have all been harmed in relationships, and i believe our healing must also exist in relationships. i know we cannot look at one's personal frame without understanding the systemic and cultural impact that intersectionality has had on one's own experience. i have committed to my clinical work always evolving, and we will both teach each other what comes next. i can't promise a safe place, but i can promise an accountable one. i will create the container, i will show up for rupture, and together we will build a foundation of trust to help you heal, grow, challenge, and shift the things that brought you here. i received my master's in clinical social work from silberman school of social work at hunter college in new york city. after graduation, i worked in community mental health, supporting young mothers on their journey towards recovery from opioid-based addictions. i then joined a group practice where i've worked for many years, supporting folks to heal complicated relationships with food, their bodies, their boundaries, their gender, and their sexuality. i believe i am a partner in this work with you, and as people change, heal, and move forward in their lives, i feel profoundly impacted to bear witness and be a part of your story. it is miraculous. finding the right therapist is a process: trust yourself, explore, ask hard questions. we work for you and with you. i am a white, queer, abolitionist, non-binary, dyslexic, jewish, body-liberatory therapist, and most importantly, a client. the only thing i ask of the folks i work with is a commitment to show up, and the rest we will figure out together.
