Welcome to my practice! My approach to therapy is relational, culturally aware, and grounded in deep respect for each client’s unique story. I want to hear YOUR story and help you find your "a-ha!" moment. My therapy style is to integrate psychodynamic therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and humanistic principles to support a deeper understanding of the self and the inner systems that influence thoughts and emotions. Hi! My name is Matt and I am a limited licensed professional counselor. I have been working as a counselor since 2022 and have been working in the mental health field since 2016. My first counseling job was at Central Michigan University and I worked with clients with a variety of concerns such as life adjustments, anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, trauma, etc. Before anything else, I'd first try to get to know you, your circumstances, your presenting problem, and your strengths before we focus on how we can make the best use of our time together, whether that be space to process, thinking of solutions, or something else. If we don't happen to be a match, that's ok! I work with a team of other mental health professionals who may be available to take on new clients as well.

A former supervisor of mine used to say, “nothing changes until it changes.” I’m here to help you take that first step. As a therapist, I know that few things are as important to the process of therapy as the working relationship between the client and their therapist. This is why I approach every session and every client with empathy, warmth, and unconditional positive regard. I strive to create a therapeutic space that is safe and non-judgmental – where you are the expert of your own experience, where you feel validated at the intersection of your various identities, and where you feel understood as a whole person. I always maintain a client-centered and strengths-based approach to help you become the ideal version of yourself. I want to build your trust in me so that I can support you through difficult and painful times. In a world that stigmatizes mental health challenges, I seek to normalize, validate, and educate. I graduated with my MSW from the University of Michigan in 2022, where I worked as a therapist at the University’s counseling center, providing therapy to students. Prior to that, I gained case management experience working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I have experience working with individuals of various nationalities; cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds; religious groups; gender identities; sexual orientations; and more! I also have worked with clients experiencing a range of mental health challenges and diagnoses, including depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, ADHD, adjustment challenges, sexuality and gender identity concerns, identity development, and substance use.

When one feels that they are more in control, they have more confidence in themselves. When one feels out of control and overwhelmed, they are lacking in confidence and often get frustrated. Thankfully there is a way to be a control freak without doing it to others. Control yourself by paying more attention to your emotions, thoughts, and actions. I want to help you do that so you can find more enjoyment out of the things you want to do and less stress doing the things you don't want to do. Let me help you create confidence in yourself to manage better and take control of your life. Some of the most common things I help you gain more control over is stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders / dysfunctions, emotional management, and relationships.

I specialize in supporting young adults as they navigate the many transitions that come with this stage of life—figuring out who they are, where they belong, and how they want to move through the world. Young adulthood can be a time of questioning, unlearning, and redefining yourself, especially after years of being told who you should be, what you should want, or how you should show up. At the heart of my work is a deep commitment to helping clients reconnect with their own voice—particularly when that voice has been shaped, silenced, or overshadowed by grief, anxiety, depression, or powerful systems and environments. In a loud, opinionated world, learning to listen to yourself and speak from a place of authenticity can feel daunting. My goal is to help you build trust in your inner voice and feel more confident using it—whether that means setting boundaries, expressing needs, or simply allowing yourself to take up space. I view therapy as a collaborative process, walking alongside you as you explore your identity, emotions, values, and the version of yourself you’re becoming. My approach is integrative and holistic, drawing from art therapy techniques, nervous system regulation, and mindfulness practices to support growth, healing, and self-connection. Starting therapy can feel intimidating, and the fact that you’re here exploring different profiles already says a lot about your courage. I’m really glad you found mine. Let’s connect and explore how we can support your healing and wellness together. Reach out for a free 15-minute consultation—available in person, by phone, or via Zoom.

Being surrounded by other college students doesn't always protect you from feeling lonely or overwhelmed. College and graduate school can feel very isolating and challenging. Starting therapy can be the first step toward realizing that you don't have to carry these challenges alone. I am currently accepting new clients at Mindful Counseling, Standale location and via Telehealth. I work with adults seeking support for anxiety, depression, relationship and family challenges, emotional regulation, separation and attachment anxiety, life transitions, and identity development. I especially enjoy working with college students and young adults as they navigate increased independence, adjusting to college, academic and career pressures, and discovering who they are. Whether you're seeking support during a difficult season of life, greater clarity, or personal growth, I'm committed to partnering with you throughout the therapeutic process. My approach is integrative and individualized, drawing from CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, mindfulness-based and somatic interventions, and person-centered therapy. I tailor treatment to each client's unique needs and developmental stage, with an emphasis on emotional regulation, self-awareness, resilience, and building on existing strengths. I strive to create a compassionate, collaborative, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel comfortable being themselves. I believe therapy is a shared human experience where we work together toward understanding, healing, and growth. Meaningful change happens through connection, collaboration, and a strong therapeutic relationship. If you're interested in learning more or scheduling a consultation, I'd love to connect. The Standale office is especially convenient for students, just five minutes from GVSU's Allendale campus, within walking distance of the Laker Line stop, and about 15 minutes from GVSU's downtown campus and Aquinas College. I look forward to connecting with you!
